Young scientists from the Pipeline Transport Institute have taken second place at the International Competition of Scientific, Technical, and Innovative Developments for the Development of the Fuel, Energy and Extractive Industries held by the Ministry of Energy of Russia.

The awards ceremony was part of the VII Russian International Energy Forum held on 25-28 June 2019 in the city of St. Petersburg.

The work presented at the contest was A System for Ensuring Emergency-Free Earthwork at Fuel and Energy Complex Facilities by four specialists from the Industrial Safety and Labor Health laboratory: Ilmar Aismatullin, Andrey Trifonov, Eldar Isaev and Sergey Yerokhin.

The system is designed for providing an excavator operator with a 3D visualization model of above-ground and underground utilities of a hazardous industrial facility (process pipelines, shut-off valves). The system has an implemented function of automatic warning in case of a critical approach of machine`s moving parts to utilities, as well as a function of emergency stopping when the minimum safety distance is achieved.

The implementation of this system will reduce the accident rates associated with damage to underground and above-ground utilities during the earthwork at Fuel and Energy Complex facilities.
