Pipeline Transport Institute Develops First Russian Density Standard Prototype

Date of publication: 26 October 2020

The Pipeline Transport Institute together with scientific institutes of metrology of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) have developed the first Russian density standard prototype, acceptance testing of which was successfully carried out from 6 to 20 October 2020 at Transneft Primorsk Port.

Density is the most important value when calculating the liquid mass. The device transfers the liquid density unit to operating measuring tools and is designed for metrological operations (verification, calibration, monitoring of metrological characteristics) of flow density transducers used within the oil and petroleum products’ lease automatic custody transfer units. This is a high-tech product and until now it has been produced exclusively abroad.

“While working on the density standard, a detailed analysis of design and operating experience of foreign devices was carried out. As a result, the prototype was created that is not inferior to foreign samples, but superior in a number of technical and metrological characteristics. This was the result of a new approach to the design of the main components of the standard,” said Sergei Vorobyov, Head of the Laboratory of Metering Operations and Metrology of the Pipeline Transport Institute.

Special attention is paid to the device’s ergonomics, convenience and ease of use (during transportation, installation, use, washing, etc.).

Batch production of these devices, as well as their integration into oil and petroleum products quality parameters measurement units are planned for the future. In addition, the device can be presented on the foreign market of equipment for the oil and gas and chemical industries.
